RestoreWorks Returns to Chicago's Iconic Civic Opera House for Historic Preservation

Peter Merlo

RestoreWorks Masonry Restoration is currently working on a significant project at the Lyric Opera House of Chicago, also known as the Civic Opera House. This project marks a return to the historic landmark, where RestoreWorks first made its mark three decades ago.

A Legacy of Restoration

Thirty years ago, RestoreWorks had the privilege of restoring the Opera House's river wall, which had been blackened by years of soot accumulation. Through careful cleaning techniques, our team successfully brought the limestone facade back to its original look, revealing the building's true appearance.

Continuing the Commitment to Preservation

Fast forward to today, and RestoreWorks is back at this iconic landmark. Our current project focuses on essential maintenance work at the roof level, including:

  1. Tuckpointing: Repairing and replacing mortar joints to prevent water infiltration and structural damage.
  2. Caulking: Sealing gaps and joints to improve the building's weatherproofing and energy efficiency.

These important tasks ensure that the Civic Opera House remains structurally sound and visually appealing for years to come.

The RestoreWorks Difference

Our return to the Lyric Opera House demonstrates RestoreWorks' commitment to quality and our deep understanding of historic preservation techniques. As our company’s CEO, Don Zuidema, stated, "It's just an honor and a privilege to be working here on such a historic landmark in Chicago."

By trusting RestoreWorks with your masonry restoration needs, you're not just hiring contractors – you're partnering with a team that takes pride in preserving Chicago's historic landmarks.

Preserving Chicago's Landmarks, One Project at a Time

Whether it's a world-renowned opera house or a local historic building, RestoreWorks approaches each project with the same level of dedication and expertise. Our ability to restore and maintain these structures ensures that Chicago's rich architectural history will continue to be appreciated and seen by others.

Spring water damage often gets blamed on cracks, failed mortar joints, or deteriorated sealants. In many cases, the real issue starts earlier, at expansion joints that were never designed, detailed, or maintained to manage seasonal movement. For commercial and multi-family buildings in Chicago, expansion joints are a primary defense against moisture intrusion during spring thaw. When they fail, water finds its way behind masonry, into wall assemblies, and down to steel and concrete elements that were never meant to stay wet.
